DH 105 Professionalism 1 (2) This course is designed to provide learners with introductory knowledge about dental hygiene practice with an emphasis on areas of responsibility, professional communication, ethical reasoning, professional development and the changing role of the dental hygienist in healthcare delivery.
DH 106 Foundations of Clinical Dental Hygiene (5.5) This course is designed to provide learners with the conceptual framework for dental hygiene practice as well as the fine psychomotor skills to support dental hygiene services.
DH 204 Clinical Client Care 1 (1.5) This course will assist learners to understand the theories and evidence that support dental hygiene clinical services. The process of care model will form the basis for this course and will be supported by the best available evidence for dental hygiene clinical services.
DH 205 Clinical Dental Hygiene 1 (6) The course will provide learners with opportunities to further develop the psychomotor, reasoning and decision-making abilities required for clinical practice. Learners will provide dental hygiene services for clients as a member of a clinical team.
DH 206 Foundations of Community Dental Hygiene (1.5) This course will assist learners to promote oral health and prevent oral diseases through community-based programs. It provides learners with an understanding of the health care system, and the social, political and economic forces influencing the system. Discussions will focus on health promotion strategies with particular emphasis on teaching and learning approaches.
DH 207 English Communication for Healthcare (0.5) This course is designed to provide learners at all levels of English language proficiency with the opportunity to improve their writing skills. Topics covered are grammar, spelling, medical terminology, types of language, paraphrasing, summarizing, academic offences, and the forms of professional written communication encountered by the dental hygienist.
DH 303 Clinical Client Care 2 (1.5) This course will build on the previous client care course to support learners in making evidence-based decisions about clinical dental hygiene services. Course discussions will focus on care for clients with medical conditions and special needs.
DH 304 Clinical Dental Hygiene 2 (7) This course will provide learners with opportunities to expand and refine their abilities in clinical dental hygiene care. The foundation knowledge gained in supporting courses will be integrated into the care provided in clinical practice. This course will also provide opportunities for rotations into dental practices.
DH 305 Community Dental Hygiene 1 (1.5) This course will provide learners the opportunity to integrate the ADPIE process into community practice. It builds on the theory of the community foundations course and assists learners to integrate such theory into practice.
DH 306 Prevention and Health Promotion (1.5) This course will assist learners to gain the abilities to support individuals and communities in the change process. The literature in health psychology, prevention, health promotion and oral epidemiology will be applied to oral health issues. Learners will gain experience in statistical analysis to support their evidence-based decisions.
DH 402 Professionalism 2 (1.5) This course will assist learners to understand their role within a national and global community context. It will provide a forum for discussing changes confronting health care professions, and issues that are impacting on regulatory bodies and professional associations thus facilitating their integration into the profession.
DH 403 Clinical Client Care 3 (1.5) This course will build on the previous client care courses to support learners in making evidence-based decisions about clinical dental hygiene services. Course discussions will continue to focus on care for clients with medical conditions and special needs with a particular emphasis on clients in residential care and the home bound.
DH 404 Clinical Dental Hygiene 3 (7.5) This course will provide learners with continued opportunities to integrate the ADPIE process into clinical dental hygiene services using the best available evidence upon which to base decisions and actions. This course will also provide opportunities for rotations into residential care facilities.
DH 405 Community Dental Hygiene 2 (1.5) This course will build on the previous community course to provide learners with additional experience in community practice. Learners will work with health care professionals to implement a community program for a specific target group based on their identified needs.
