Dental Hygiene Program

dental_header

ODEI’s Dental Hygiene program is an innovative curriculum designed to provide students with the maximum amount of hands-on experiential education, to become skilled professionals committed to life-long learning.

The program is 22 months in length and is divided into 4 consecutive terms.  Each term consists of 20 weeks with a break of 3 weeks between terms.

During terms 1 and 2, students are in class Monday through Thursday with the earliest start time at 8:am and the latest end time at 5:30pm.  During terms 3 and 4, students will be in lectures on Tuesdays and Thursdays with the earliest start time at 8:00am and the latest end time at 5:30pm.  Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in term 3 and 4 are clinic days with three sessions a day - morning, midday and late afternoon.  Each student will be assisgned to attend one clinic session on each of these days.

As of September 2011, dental hygiene education in Ontario has changed.  All dental hygiene programs, including community colleges and private colleges, adapted their programs to include the new Entry to Practice Competencies and Standards for Canadian Dental Hygienists.  The National Competencies are implemented in dental hygiene programs across Canada, with each province adapting at an individualized timeline.  The National Dental Hygiene Certification Board will be updating the examination to reflect these new competencies as of 2013.
