Course Description: Describing Oral Lesions is designed to increase documentation skills when oral lesions are discovered.  We will discuss the DH process of care, review common lesion descriptors, and consider dental hygiene referral pathways.  Case studies will provide opportunity to work through a step-wise process of formulating clinical descriptions for appropriate documentation and professional communications.  The second component of this course, Transforming Theory into Practice, is designed to empower participants to implement oral cancer screening exams into routine clinical practice.  We will identify barriers to performing the exams, discuss strategies to overcome them, and practice hands-on skills in a peer-supported collaborative environment.
Learning Outcomes: Learning Outcomes – A:
1.    Implement the ADPIE dental hygiene process of care into clinical practice.
2.    Utilize Darby and Walsh’s Human Needs conceptual model in developing dental hygiene diagnoses.
3.    Critically consider various components of accurate lesion assessment and documentation.
4.    Document oral lesions accurately using consistent and commonly used descriptions, and write an inter-disciplinary referral letter.
Learning Outcomes - B:
1.    Apply a step-wise ethical decision-making model.
2.    Recognize and overcome barriers to the inclusion of oral cancer screening as part of routing clinical dental hygiene practice.
3.    Recognize the need for behaviour change, and apply the Transtheoretical Model as a strategy to overcome behaviour-related barriers leading to long-term changes in practice behaviours.
4.    Implement effective conflict resolution styles and strategies.
5.    Perform effective oral cancer screening exams (i.e., intra/extra-oral exams) with confidence.
    Learning Objectives:
    •  Learning Objectives – A:
      Participants will be able to:
      •    Define and discuss, as an introduction or review, ADPIE as a reflection of the DH process of care and standards of practice.
      •    List the 8 basic human needs used in formulating a dental hygiene diagnosis.
      •    Explain the intra- and extra-oral exams as a fundamental component of the assessment phase of ADPIE.
      •    Define common descriptive terms used to describe oral lesions.
      •    Discuss a step-wise assessment process that may contribute to accurate documentation and clinical decision-making.
      •    Understand and explain intra- and inter-professional communication and referral pathways.
      Learning Objectives – B:
      Participants will be able to:
      •    Identify and discuss barriers as a means to over come them.
      •    Logically analyze ethical dilemmas associated with identified barriers to performing oral cancer screening exams using a step-wise process and therefore, make appropriate and empowered practice decisions
      •    Understand processes involved in implementing behaviour change and recognize their current place in the change process.
      •    Discuss conflict resolutions styles.
      •    Describe the intra- and extra- oral exams that are required to discover oral cancer in a timely manner leading to earlier diagnosis and treatment, and more favourable outcomes.
      •    Practice the examinations in a peer-supported environment.
